Chanel & Tribeca Film Festival Partner for Citywide Art Project Celebrating New York City
The collaborative series explores the rebirth of New York City through the world of art and film.
Chanel and the Tribeca Film Festival are no stranger to collaboration. The two creative powerhouses have joined forces on a variety of projects, films, and artistic endeavors since 2005. This year is no different with the debut of an all-new art project unveiling today.
In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Festival's Art Awards, Chanel partners with the organization for a collaborative series of sketches, prints, and photographs. Titled Art is New York/New York is Art, the emotive series explores the healing power of art and honors New York City's impending rebirth after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Enlisting the help of over 60 Art Award contributors past and present, the project manifests itself in the form of various mediums, graphics, and messages. Focused on reviving the city's arts and entertainment industry, which was hard-hit throughout the pandemic, the series' artwork will be placed on select storefronts and locations throughout New York City, now through the next four weeks.
Participating artists include Kiki Smith, Nate Lowman, Swoon, Matthew Modine, Christopher Walken, Aurel Schmidt, Kalup Linzy, Don Gummer, Sophie Matisse, and Dustin Yellin. Also a part of the collaboration is a short film narrated by Julian Schnabel, Donna Ferrato, and Chuck D. Coinciding with the animated energy of the overall campaign, the film explores the aforementioned artists' work and undying connection to New York City.
“Tribeca’s longstanding partnership with Chanel in supporting human expression through art is deeply rooted in the spirit of the festival. Their commitment to honoring the boldness and authenticity of artists is palpable,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Festival. “There’s no better way to see New York come alive and heal than through the creative lens of these wonderful artists. This project beautifully represents the city.”
The 20th edition of the Tribeca Film Festival runs from Wednesday, June 9 to June 20. Chanel and the Festival's collaboration will end with a special 25-year anniversary screening of Schnabel’s remastered film Basquiat on June 17, 2021.
