Young Photos of Karl Lagerfeld

In honor of this year's Met Gala theme, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," let's take a look back at some of his younger days as a designer.

Karl Lagerfeld, also referred to as "King Karl," was one of the most successful fashion designers of the 20th century. Best known for his role as creative director at both Chanel and Fendi, Lagerfeld's legacy will continue on in the modern fashion world. The German-born designer made his way in the industry by initially winning the coats category in a design competition led by the International Wool Secretariat in 1955, which led him to be hired as Pierre Balmain's assistant. Since then, Lagerfeld's name has become synonymous with fashion luxury.

It's no surprise that Lagerfeld was the best of his time because his work ethic was incomparable. Each year, he designed extraordinary women's ready-to-wear and haute couture collections for Chanel and Fendi, as well as ready-to-wear designs for his own namesake brand. To this day, no one can do it like Lagerfeld. This year's Met Gala is an ode to Legerfeld's devotion to the fashion industry, and it comes after his tragic passing in 2019. He designed countless infamous Met Gala looks for Claudia Schiffer, Blake Lively, Dakota Johnson, and many others. We will forever miss seeing his signature white ponytail, black sunglasses, and eccentric sense of fashion.
