From Taylor Swift to 1989 (Taylor's Version), L'OFFICIEL takes a look at Taylor Swift's album aesthetics.

Taylor Swift has been releasing music since the age of 16. Now, she has created an empire. This year alone she began one of the most successful concert tours, the Eras Tour, in music history, became a billionaire, and was named Time's Person of the Year. From the start of her career, Taylor has been constantly reinventing her public image, beginning with her very first album.

Taylor Swift's career can be divided into several distinct eras, each marked by a unique sound, style, and thematic focus. From her country beginnings with albums like "Taylor Swift" and "Fearless" to her transition into pop with "1989" and "Reputation," Swift has consistently reinvented herself while maintaining her core identity as a singer-songwriter. One of the most notable aspects of Swift's career is her ability to connect with her audience on a deeply personal level through her music, often drawing from her own experiences and emotions. This authenticity has endeared her to millions of fans around the world and has solidified her status as one of the most influential artists of her generation.

From country sweetheart to pop icon to indie folk singer, Swift has explored many different aesthetics in her 18-year career. Spanning 152 shows across five continents, the first leg of the Eras Tour kicked off on March 17, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, United States, and is scheduled to wrap up on December 8, 2024, in Vancouver, Canada. After the Eras Tour concluded, Swift spent time with her new boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and catching up with her friends. The pop star also made appearances at various awards shows, including the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she made a surprise announcement—the arrival of a new album. Months later, The Tortured Poets Department has enjoyed one of the most successful debuts of all time, with Swift shattering records made by music icons and becoming the first artist to reach 300 million Spotify streams on a new album in just one day. In the wake of the album's release, Swift continued to lay low on social media and in the public eye and seemingly continued to spend time with family and friends after her series of successes. As of May 2024, the star has returned to the road and has picked up right where she left off with the Eras Tour, jetting off this time on the European leg of the tour. Just a few days in, Swift has already made headlines, as she shifted the setlist to reflect tracks from her newest album, and the star has debuted several new looks as part of the TTPD era.

As the star sets back out on the tour trail, join L'OFFICIEL as we take a look at each defining era—both music and fashion—in her career.

Swift's debut album was simply titled Taylor Swift. Fully country and written while she was in high school, the innocence and youthfulness were reflected in her tight curls, sundresses, and cowboy boots on Taylor Swift's feet.

Fearless (2008)

Swift's second album Fearless established her as a crossover artist with the success of singles "Love Story" and "You Belong With Me." The "Fearless" era marked Swift's emergence as a dominant force in the music industry, earning her critical acclaim and numerous awards, including four Grammy Awards.  Fearless remains the most awarded album in country music history, including Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2010. With hits like "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me," Swift captured the hearts of listeners with her heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies. The success of "Fearless" laid the foundation for Swift's subsequent albums and cemented her reputation as a talented songwriter and performer. Swift's era of style for this album consisted of sparkly fringe dresses, ballgowns, and her signature lucky number 13 painted on the back of her hand.

Speak Now (2010)

Following the success of her "Fearless" era, Swift continued to evolve as an artist, experimenting with different musical styles and themes. The release of "Speak Now" further showcased Swift's songwriting prowess, with every track on the album solely written by her. The album's lead single, "Mine," debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, further solidifying Swift's status as a pop powerhouse.

With Speak Now, Swift really leaned into theatrical elements. Her music video for "Mean" had her leaning into her country roots, while her red carpet looks from this era became more glam and grown-up. Considering this was her first album in her 20s, it made sense that she seemed to be experimenting with freh styles and sounds.

Red (2012)

The "Red" era saw Swift exploring new sonic territory, incorporating elements of pop and rock into her music. The album's title track, "Red," became an anthem for heartbreak and longing, while tracks like "22" and "I Knew You Were Trouble" showcased Swift's ability to write infectious pop hooks. The "Red" era also marked Swift's transition from country to pop, setting the stage for her subsequent albums.

Despite the album being a mix of country and pop, Swift's Red album has one of the most consistent aesthetics among her albums. Besides the obvious color threading it together, the singer's love for all things vintage was evident throughout all of her looks. High-waisted shorts, '50s dresses, and her now-iconic red lip and bangs combo were all essentials of the Red era.

1989 (2014)

Swift's first full pop album came with 1989. Inspired by the golden era of '80s pop, her glittery crop tops and freshly cut bob aided her evolution to pop stardom. Like Fearless, 1989 is the most awarded pop album by any artist in history.

The album's lead single, "Shake It Off," became an instant hit, topping the charts in multiple countries and earning Swift her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The success of "1989" solidified Swift's status as a pop superstar and earned her numerous awards, including three Grammy Awards.

In addition to her studio albums, Swift is also known for her elaborate and visually stunning tours. Much like her ongoing Eras tour, one of the most iconic tours of her career was the "1989 World Tour," which saw Swift performing in stadiums and arenas around the world. The tour featured elaborate stage setups, costume changes, and special effects, making it a must-see event for fans.

Swift's tours are not only known for their spectacle but also for their intimate moments, with Swift often interacting with fans and sharing personal stories between songs. This connection with her audience is a hallmark of Swift's live performances and has helped her cultivate a dedicated fan base.

Reputation (2017)

After the drama with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Swift disappeared from the public eye for a year. When she came back with Reputation, she gave us an aesthetic and era we'd never seen from her before. The moody style of this album was emphasized by dark lipstick, black bodysuits, and snake motifs.

The album's lead single, "Look What You Made Me Do," marked a departure from Swift's previous sound, featuring dark production and biting lyrics. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, "Reputation" was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and spawning several hit singles.

Lover (2019)

Drastically different from Reputation, Swift's Lover album was the rainbow after the storm. Butterflies replaced snakes and pastel pinks, blues, and purples took over the dark color palette of the past. While this era was cut short by the pandemic, the colorful celebration of love was fun while it lasted.

Folklore (2020)

While in isolation due to COVID, Swift spent her time creating an alternative indie album. Inspired by folksongs and escapism, the album's aesthetic was simple but the songwriting was some of her best. The Grammys must have agreed because Folklore earned the singer-songwriter her third Album of the Year Grammy, making her the first woman to accomplish that feat.

Evermore (2020)

Less than five months after Folklore, Swift released Evermore, a continuation of lockdown musings. The album aesthetics were very similar, with the most noticeable difference being that Folklore was a summer album while Evermore was a winter one.

Fearless (Taylor's Version) (2021)

In April 2021, Swift released her first re-recorded album, Fearless (Taylor's Version). After losing the rights to her masters, Swift decided to re-record her previous albums to regain ownership over her songs. With the re-records, she also added some previously unreleased songs to the album.

Unlike Fearless (Taylor's Version), Swift went on a mini promotional tour for Red (Taylor's Version). She released a short film for her highly anticipated 10-minute version of "All Too Well" starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien, performed the song on Saturday Night Live, and even released a music video for another single, "I Bet You Think About Me" directed by Blake Lively

At the 2022 VMAs, Swift announced her recently released 10th original studio album, Midnights. The 13-song soundtrack maintains her pop vibes yet she has also found a soft edge to include in the sound. Swift has officially returned and has clearly come back with a new confidence and a lot to say.

1989 (Taylor's Version) (2023)

On August 9, 2023, during her final U.S. show for her Eras Tour in Los Angeles, Swift announced she will be releasing 1989 (Taylor's Version) on October 27. Her first Grammy-winning pop album, 1989 has hits such as "Wildest Dreams," "Blank Space," and "Shake It Off."

At the 2024 Grammy Awards, Swift announces an upcoming album, titled The Tortured Poets Department. The album was released on April 19, 2024, and just a few hours later, Swift dropped the anthology edition of the collection, which was almost double the original in duration. The album is characterized, in Swift's own words, by a sense of "female rage" following several public heartbreaks. Although many songs followed her relationships with Matty Healy and Joe Alwyn, other tracks dove into the star's sense of identity as a public figure, her struggle with depression, and reflections on her self-esteem, marking this latest album as her darkest yet—both aesthetically and thematically.

On the European leg of the Eras Tour, Swift elected to include several hit tracks from her latest album at the expense of older tracks. While fans mourned the loss of some songs from the setlist, many were ecstatic to see the pop star unveil her new costumes for the latest era. Among the new pieces, Swift debuted a custom white Vivienne Westwood gown, complete with a classic choker from the label's emblematic jewelry collection.

Swift's latest tour costumes reflect the star's shift in style since entering her TTPD era. While the Midnights era was defined by bedazzled looks and muted, but colorful looks, The Tortured Poets Department has ushered in a completely new black-and-white era. Think Reputation, but if it went coquettecore. Many fans have reflected upon the album and concluded that it feels like the singer's most mature work yet, so it's no surprise that her style reflects a vintage-inspired, moody energy.
