It's that time of year again, students are returning to campus, and a new school year is just beginning. Greek Life is in full swing and with that means Rush TikTok is back! For the past couple of years right around this time of month we have seen the happenings of Greek Life Rush all over the US. "Rush," a multi-day event where "pledges" try to gain membership in sororities or fraternities, the craze took over social media feeds with OOTD videos, insight into the process, and lots of anticipation. With videos tagged "RushTok" totaling over 130 million views, Greek Life content has taken over social media feeds.
Showing off preppy outfits, jewelry from sorority-favorite Kendra Scott, and the trials and tribulations of rush, students gave insight into famed organizations that many would not have gained access to otherwise.
Originating in 1882 at Syracuse University, Greek Life began as a way for students to bond and create connections—the word sorority comes from the Latin word "soror" meaning sister. In the following years, organizations expanded throughout universities across the United States. The Divine Nine—a group of nine historically Black Greek organizations—was started in 1929 and still remains a force throughout the country in the modern day.
While social media as a whole is learning more about the elusive process, fraternities, and sororities have welcomed dozens of notable celebrities, politicians, and artists. Whether it be Alicia Keys at Alpha Kappa Alpha or Meghan Markle and Kappa Kappa Gamma, these celebrities undoubtedly embraced the beauties of Greek Life. Prior to both her acting career and membership in the Royal Family, Markle attended Northwestern University. Markle joined Kappa Kappa Gamma during her time at the university.
From 2000 to 2002, Kourtney Kardashian attended the University of Arizona where she studied business. Mixed into her studies was a membership with Alpha Phi who call themselves "the Ivy League of Greek Life."
Global superstar Michael Jordan was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Keys was inducted as an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha in 2004. Known as AKA, the sorority is a part of the Divine Nine—a group of historically Black fraternities and sororities. AKA has other notable honorary members like Ava DuVernay, Brandy, Maya Angelou, and Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Actor Matthew McConaughey attended the University of Texas at Austin before his Hollywood big break. While at the prestigious university, McConaughey was a member of Delta Tau Delta.
