Timothée Chalamet Pays Homage to Edward Scissorhands in Super Bowl LV Commercial
More than 30 years after the premiere of Johnny Depp's Edward Scissorhands, Timothée Chalamet has reincarnated the role in a 90-second Cadillac advertisement during the Super Bowl LV. In the commercial, Winona Ryder reprises her role of Kim Boggs, the love interest of Depp's character, while Chalamet plays her son, Edgar, who, like his father, is plagued with sharp, untenable scissors for hands. Rocking the same messy 'do and ghostly appearance as the original character, Edgar also struggles to fit in with the modern world, shown when he is kept off the bus and fired from his job. However, life gets a little easier when his mom gifts him a new, self-driving Cadillac Lyriq.

"Edward Scissorhands was a movie I adored growing up, and the opportunity to step into that world was a dream come true," Chalamet told Vogue about the ad. "I also love the director David Shane’s work in the commercial space, and he was really open to collaborating on this."
He continued, "This was a wonderful opportunity to hopefully make the original material relatable to a modern audience without sacrificing the originality of the 1990 version. Instead, we wanted to create a character that didn’t make you blink in terms of a present-day setting, but was a total homage to the character Johnny Depp created."
To adapt the character for a 2021 setting, Chalamet worked with costume designer Melissa DesRosiers on the finer details surrounding Edgar's wardrobe. "We used beat-up iPhone charger cables for his shoelaces and more grungy-feeling flannels with scissor cuts throughout," said Chalamet. The Call Me by Your Name actor also fashioned Depp's original crescent moon belt buckle into his ensemble as "a small callback to the past."
