Following in the footsteps of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, the Call Me by Your Name star is the latest actor to take on the role of the iconic chocolatier.

Hold your breath, make a wish, and count to three because Timothée Chalamet has just been cast to star as a young Willy Wonka in the upcoming film Wonka. While the legendary character has been embodied by the likes of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp in past adaptations of Roald Dahl's 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the new project will chronicle the chocolate maker's back story.

According to Deadline, a source says that the new movie will be the debut of Chalamet's talents of song and dance as, like its predecessors, Wonka will be a musical. The training involved for these musical numbers initially conflicted with the actor's schedule, however, Warner Bros. has been keen on casting him for the role for some time. In January 2021, Collider reported that both Chalamet and Tom Holland were in the running for the role, both of whom have musical and dance backgrounds. Holland starred in Billy Elliot as a child, while Chalamet, the son of a Broadway actress, starred in musicals throughout his high school career at the performing arts school LaGuardia.

While Wonka is said to depict the inventor's early life and adventures prior to his confectionary career, the rest of the film's plot is still unknown. No other casting updates have been announced, however, the studio revealed earlier this year that the film is expected to hit theaters on March 23, 2023.

In the meantime, the Call Me by Your Name actor has several other film projects on the horizon. Later this year, he will star in the sci-fi thriller Dune alongside Zendaya as well as Wes Anderson's new movie The French Dispatch, playing opposite his repeat co-star Saoirse Ronan.
