12 New Movies & TV Shows to Watch in May 2023
From Disney adaptations to murder dramas, here are the top movies and TV shows to watch this coming May.
May is a big month for the film industry this year. After a long, cold winter, we finally have something to look forward to. There are so many long-awaited films that will premiere, including the new The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey, Love Again starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Netflix's The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez. Although we all love to sit by the pool or go to concerts once it gets warmer out, sometimes the spring and summer months lead to boredom. L'OFFICIEL has compiled a list of films coming out this May for your viewing pleasure.
White House Plumbers (May 1)
This is a modal window.
The new HBO series takes us behind the scenes of the Watergate scandal, the historic event that occurred during Richard Nixon's presidency. Starring Woody Harrelson, Justin Theroux, and Judy Greer, this satirical drama unfolds the investigation of the Pentagon Papers leak with an ounce of humor.
Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All (May 3)
We all love a good celebrity documentary, but Ed Sheeran was the last person we'd expect to share his story. As one of the most private public figures, he hasn't really let anyone in on what his life was like before becoming an icon. Sheeran talks us through his own self-discovery and the struggles he experienced in his relationship with his wife. You can watch his docuseries on Disney+ this May.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (May 4)
The long-awaited prequel spin-off of the Netflix series Bridgerton is a deeper dive into the life of Queen Charlotte. She is a prominent character in the original series; however, no one really knows how she rose to power. The series will take viewers back to the 1700s during the early years of Charlotte's marriage to King George.
Bupkis (May 4)
Although it is fictionalized in many ways, Bupkis follows Pete Davidson, playing himself, as viewers get an inside look into the comedian's mind. We expect the show to be as hilarious as his stand-up acts, maybe even more so. Davidson stars alongside Joe Pesci, Ray Romano, and Brad Garrett.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 (May 5)
Starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 is the sequel of the Marvel franchise. In the previous film, after losing Gamora (Saldana), Quill (Pratt) hasn't been able to move past it. In order to save the universe, however, he must get his team back together and move onward. If they don't succeed, the Guardians will no longer exist.
Knights of the Zodiac (May 12)
Book Club: The Next Chapter (May 12)
In this Book Club sequel, a group of four friends (Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen, and Candice Burgen) take their book club overseas to Italy. Despite the relaxing scenery, when their trip takes a turn, the ladies begin an adventure worthy of its own novel.
Love Again (May 12)
The long-awaited Love Again will finally be released this May. Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Celine Dion, the film follows the storyline of Mira Ray (Chopra Jonas) who has recently lost her fiance. She comes in contact with journalist Rob Burns (Sam Heughan) who has her fiance's old phone number. They quickly develop a romantic relationship as they navigate a unique job opportunity.
Fast X (May 19)
If you're a Fast and the Furious lover, this is the film for you. In the latest installment, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family must fight for their lives. When they're faced with a new enemy, their entire world becomes threatened, so it's up to Dom to save the day.
The Little Mermaid (May 26)
The new Disney adaptation of The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey will be released in late May. With its beautiful cinematography and diverse cast, the film tells the story of a young girl who lives under the sea. The plot is expected to stay close to the original storyline but with a modern twist.
The Mother (May 26)
Jennifer Lopez is set to star in Netflix's The Mother, an action drama that takes us through the journey of an estranged mother who comes to her daughter's rescue just in the knick of time. As an assassin herself, the mother (Lopez) knows exactly what to do to keep her and her daughter safe.
About My Father (May 26)
About My Father, starring Kim Cattrall and Robert De Niro, teaches us the true meaning of family. Alongside his fiance and her family, a man takes his father for a weekend getaway. As the two families begin to get to know each other, some tension begins to rise, but they all soon learn that compromise is an important virtue.
