Hotels are ideal places. They're romantic and cinematographic. There are numerous films, including Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation and Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel, and shows, such as HBO's The White Lotus, that rely on the hotel environment to unfold their story. We get drunk (with all the comical consequences that drunkenness implies, according to the implacable equation that has proven its worth in Billy Wilder's comedies), we fall in love (with the inevitable complications involved), and more. In short, the hotel, a more concentrated chemical precipitate of life, is a perfect space for fiction.
Produced by Apple TV+, Acapulco mixes classic rom-com with slapstick comedy and builds a certain effervescent lightness. The series looks at the rise of pool boy Máximo Gallardo against a backdrop of rivalries between employees, bosses, and clients, in (more or less) fine parodies of the characters of the sweetest telenovelas. The show is quite moving even under its candy-pink silk taffeta and does not lack narrative intelligence, despite a fairly banal device, with its mischievous but obvious wink to that of Citizen Kane. The sensitivity in the design of the characters, up to the most secondary, are filmed with unexpected empathic gentleness. While winter will soon envelop us, the light and tangy inconsistency of this creation will make for a perfect escape watch. Justify pouring yourself a frozen margarita, or one of its variations and join the characters on their journey.
Created by Austin Winsberg, Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman, with Eugenio Derbez, Enrique Arrizon, Julian Sedgwick, Rossana de León and Lobo Elias.
