On December 21, the Italian Senate approved an amendment to the law that aims to close the remaining 10 fur farms in the country within six months and permanently ban the production of fur animals throughout Italy. Although this decision still requires the final consent of Parliament, it is expected that support will be obtained and Italy will become the 16th country in Europe to ban fur farms.

Many famous Italian designers have already given up the use of natural furs including Valentino, Armani, Gucci, Prada, and Versace. In 2021 alone, both Saint Laurent and Oscar de la Renta (at the urging of Billie Eilish) have announced that they will also stop using fur in the new year.

If the amendment to the law is implemented, the breeding of fur animals, including foxes, raccoon dogs, chinchillas, and more, will be banned halted, and by June 30, 2022, all fur farms in Italy will be closed.
