Who is Lupita Nyong'o Dating? Why She and Selema Masekela Have Broken Up
Lupita Nyong'o breaks her silence on why she and Selema Masekela split — an explanation that comes a day after she was spotted with Joshua Jackson.
Lupita Nyong'o is breaking her silence. On Thursday night, the actress posted on Instagram the reason why she and sports commentator Selema Masekela have broken up after dating for less than a year.
She starts off the post by addressing that there are "more important things going on in the world right now" in regard to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian war and that her "thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering."
"At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust," she wrote. "I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception. I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, 'Whatever, my life is better this way.'"
"But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love," she continued. "And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass. The promise, they say, is that a tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness."
"I hope it’s true… I share this to keep it 100%, and hoping that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it," she wrote.
Since her breakup, she has completely wiped all photos of Masekela from her social media feed. But new photos that have surfaced have fans questioning if Nyong'o is already seeing someone new. The photos in question are of her and Joshua Jackson — the recent ex-husband of Jodie Turner-Smith. Nyong'o and Jackson were photographed at a Janelle Monáe concert in Los Angeles Wednesday night.
While neither party has addressed the outing, sources told TMZ that the two "arrived together, but were among a group of about 9 or 10 people ... they've known each other for years, and there's nothing romantic about the night out."
In early October, word broke out that Turner-Smith and Jackson had filed for divorce after four years of marriage. Ultimately, it was Turner-Smith who decided to call it quits and end the marriage.
"They are on very different paths in life," an insider told People. "Jodie loves being a mom. She also loves working. It turned into an unhealthy marriage that made her unhappy. They will co-parent their daughter. They want her to continue to thrive."
The Sex Education actress reportedly cited "irreconcilable differences" as the grounds for their divorce, according to the divorce petition People obtained. That said, Jackson was reportedly surprised by the separation, according to an insider who spoke to Us Weekly.
"Joshua was clearly caught off guard by Jodie’s decision to divorce," the insider said. "They had their issues, as many couples do — especially two busy actors who are also juggling a child. Joshua obviously didn’t realize it was this bad, that Jodie was this unhappy."
