Here's Why Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello Are Getting a Divorce

This year, July has unexpectedly become celebrity divorce season. Following the news of Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez going their separate ways, it was reported that after seven years of marriage, Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello are getting a divorce. This of course leaves the biggest question: why?

The couple sent a joint statement to Page Six saying, "We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives."

An anonymous source gives additional insight to Page Six about the situation, stating, "Sofía and Joe have been growing apart for a while now and are taking some distance from each other to contemplate their future."

Alarms were going off went Vergara posted photos of herself and her best friends enjoying themselves in Capri, without Manganiello's presence. Additional concerns were raised when Manganiello posted a birthday tribute to Vergara with a simple caption of, "!!Feliz Cumpleaños Sofía!!!" While the birthday recognition was sweet, fans were quick to point out the lack of any words of endearment.

"At the start of Sofia’s big birthday trip, those close to her were explaining away Joe’s absence with the excuse that he was busy filming back on the East Coast; that excuse barely held up due to the writer’s strike, but once the actor’s strike took effect, he could have been on the first flight… and he quite clearly is not," a source told Page Six. "So now no one out there with her is even attempting to pretend that it’s not over. It’s over. It’s done."

Per the Daily Mail, Manganiello's sobriety may have also factored into their separation. Having been sober for 21 years, an insider close to the couple says Manganiello was "'warned' about getting in a serious relationship with someone who was not actively sober."

The insider stated that "[Manganiello] did not think that he was going to change [Vergara] but he also didn’t think about the implications this could have on their marriage," adding that she also "could not have been more supportive" of his sobriety.

According to sources who spoke to the Daily Mail, ultimately, the couple "had drifted apart due to their 'different attitudes' - after first bonding over being opposites."

"Joe is a big kid...[who] always loves being out and about and just having a good time," a source continued. "And then when it is time to be serious and when it is time to get to work, he turns on that part of himself."

Calling this behavior "an immediate attraction" for Vergara, sources stated that over time "the true versions of themselves started showing and they just got annoyed with each other, choosing work over hanging out."

"Then bit by bit, they stopped wanting to be together and stopped hanging out because something so little would often trigger an attitude that would bug them, just their attitudes on everything were completely different and something like that is extremely draining for a relationship and they got to the point where it would be a good day and one thing would be said or done and they would just get upset with each other," the insider said. "It added up to where now it is easier and more relaxing not being together. When people say they will be friendly, they will, but the romance part of things is over. They grew apart from something that could have been really good."

Following their announced separation, the couple's $100 million prenup agreement was leaked. When the two got married in 2015, they signed a multimillion-dollar prenup, ensuring a clean split and protection of their finances. Having made millions from her time on Modern Family and owning her own beauty brand, Vergara's net worth is $180 million — $140 million more than Manganiello's $40 million net worth. The couple has no children, but they do share custody over their dog, Bubbles, and recently bought a nearby residence to their newly re-listed $18 million Beverly Hills home.

A divorce attorney gave his opinion to Page Six, stating that their prenup is probably a "walkway" meaning "Sofia keeps what she has and what she earns, and [Joe] keeps what he has and what he's earned."

Following the news of their divorce, the former couple has already been photographed with no wedding rings in sight.
