After stealing the show by dressing up as the Statue of Liberty at this year's Governors Ball music festival, all eyes are on Chappell Roan. It's been a year of massive career growth for the popstar; she's been playing to bigger and bigger audiences after releasing her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess last year. As the venues grow larger, Chappell Roan's tour outfits have gotten more extravagant and glamorous. She is becoming a master of using an outfit to inform her stage presence, consistently leaning into the dramatic characters that her costumes create as she continues to tour.

With the opportunity to tour with musicians like Vancy Joy and Declan McKenna in the early days of her career and recently touring with Olivia Rodrigo, Roan has had the chance to build her stage presence for years. Her recent popularity might seem sudden, but she's been focused on her music since 2017 when she released her debut single "Good Hurt." This is an artist to keep an eye on as she continues to update her style alongside her music.

Ever since she started touring for her debut album last year, Roan has invitated her fans to let loose with a Chappell Roan tour outfit of their own. She even assigned specific themes to various shows on her tour, encouraging fans to dress up alongside her in their most authentic and fun outfits. On Instagram, she shared a  list of cities where she was playing and assigned each night a theme based on songs from her album, from "Naked in Manhattan" to "Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl." In the post, she told her fans to "go full out" and that she encourages people to dress up "because it’s SO fun to see others in costume too."

At the Governors Ball music festival in New York City, Roan surprised the audience by emerging onto the stage as the Statue of Liberty, complete with green body paint and a crown. She made a meaningful statement onstage about her outfit, quoting the poem written on the Statue of Liberty and adding: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free...That means freedom in trans rights, that means freedom in women's rights...and it especially means freedom for all oppressed people in occupied territories."

Boston Calling Music Festival

At Boston Calling this year, Roan performed to a packed crowd in a red corset with black detailing and a matching choker and laced-up sleeves. She began the set with a long red coat trimmed in black feathers, but changed out of it to reveal the corset underneath. This is becoming a signature move in the Chappel Roan tour outfit repertoire. She often opting to wear one intricate outfit during the opening of a concert and then switch to a complimentary outfit later on that is easier to move in, though no less sparkly. 

The GUTS World Tour: Palm Springs, CA

Roan gained an even more dedicated fanbase after she opened for Olivia Rodrigo on the GUTS World Tour. The beaded fringe of her purple monochromatic outfit on opening night created an eye-catching movement while she danced. Cowboy hats like the one Roan wore on the GUTS tour have become a signature accessory for many fans going to her concerts. 

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

While performing her hit song "Red Wine Supernova" on The Late Show, Roan donned a white corset and mini petticoat, reminiscent of a modern Marie Antoinette. The white boots and pink gloves add a flair of pop playfulness and fun alongside the intricate, detailed corset.

The Midwest Princess Tour: Charleston, SC

 

Roan merged royalty with Americana at the Charleston show on her tour, with a structured ballgown made out of Wrangler cameoflage fabric. The look perfectly matched the "Midwest Princess" persona that she has curated for the stage. As usual, the accessories and makeup elevated the dress to add another level of theatrics and flair.

In London, Roan's signature princess look appeared in full force with puff sleeves and satin gloves accentuating her blue and gold minidress. The bold eye makeup added a touch of '80s electricity, and the short cut of the dress added just enough modernity to the ballgown style.

Coachella

At this year's Coachella music festival, Roan pulled out all the stops to ensure that her set would stand out among the long list of other artists. In bold cheetah print tights and a latex top that read "Eat Me," she kicked off weekend one of the festival with high energy and edgy leather accents. Each show provides a new opportunity to tell a different story through clothing, and Coachella saw Roan pushing into new style terrain as she ditched the sequined corsets and cowboy hats in favor of something fresh.

Hangout Music Festival

 

On the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Roan turned the Hangout Music Festival into her own Superbowl in a football-themed outfit. Sporting a customized cropped football jersey that referenced the title of her latest single "Good Luck, Babe!" and a matching jockstrap, Roan embodied the energy of a winning football player during her set. The notes of glitter and rhinestones throughout the entire outfit, down to her sparkling eye black, gave the outfit the finishing touch it needed to shine under the bright stage lights.

The GUTS World Tour: Boston, MA

Roan proved just how showstopping a bold monochromatic outfit can be in this bright blue outfit she wore on the GUTS World Tour. Using bold tights and sequined gloves, Roan turned her matching crop top and shorts set into something more pop star-worthy. Her blue cowboy boots called back to her midwest roots without sacrificing any glamor.

In Chicago, Roan stepped onstage in a shimmering pink ensemble that called to mind her song "Pink Pony Club." The cropped jacket layered on top of a sparkling pink bra created a disco-meets-western look when paired with a thick fringe belt, pink fishnets and mini shorts. Covered in rhinestones and glitter, Roan became her own disco ball for the night, reflecting her light onto the audience.
