Friday the 13th is one of the most mystical dates of the year! For many, it can be a sign of bad luck, for others, it's a lucky number. But do you know how this belief started?
According to <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/what-is-friday-13th-superstition-facts-science" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Geographic</a>, the myth surrounding the date is rooted in the religious beliefs surrounding the 13th guest at the Last Supper (Judas, the apostle said to have betrayed Jesus) and the crucifixion that would have taken place on a Friday. The two elements together create a seemingly unfavorable day for some, but there are many who are very optimistic.
There is no evidence that 13 was considered an unlucky number by older cultures, dating back to BC. On the contrary, many people considered it a sacred number. For the Egyptians, life was composed of 12 different stages for the human being to reach before the 13th stage of eternal life.
In this way, the number 13 was associated with death, not with a negative connotation but as a glorious transformation. This connection with death remained and was distorted by other cultures that harbored the fear of death and did not see it as something present in the destiny of any life. That notion was furthered with the making of the horror film Friday the 13th.
