13 Celebrity Friendships You Didn’t Know Existed
On International Friendship Day, discover the unexpected celebrity pairs who have proven that friends can be found anywhere.
Bestie, whether you want to admit it or not, we’re all guilty of secretly obsessing over celebrity friendships. From Taylor Swift including the names of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’s children in several songs on Folklore to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck being best buds since high school, it’s hard to not be jealous of these relationships. However, there are tons of celebrity friendships that we might not even be aware of that are just as adorable. Here, L’OFFICIEL rounds up a list of the most surprising celebrity friendships in honor of National Best Friend Day.
Ed Sheeran and Courteney Cox
Ed Sheeran has many celebrity friendships—and with his charisma, kindness, and talent, we don't doubt why. Among some of his more unexpected friendships is his relationship with Courteney Cox. For the HBO Max special Friends: The Reunion, the pair recreated Monica and Ross Geller’s old choreographed dance routine from a childhood contest in the original show.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z
Paltrow and Beyoncé met back in 2006 at a charity event in New York City and their friendship has been history ever since. They’ve had their ups and downs, especially with the speculation that Paltrow could have been “Becky with the good hair,” the woman Beyoncé referenced as Jay-Z's mistress in her 2016 song “Sorry," but we’d like to think they’re still close—apparently Paltrow’s kids call Jay-Z “Uncle Jay.”
Elton John and Eminem
Elton John and Eminem have had a long friendship, beginning at the 2002 Grammys, where they performed a duet together. Since then, they have been there for each other through thick and thin—including when Eminem was going through treatment for drug addiction—and John would call him every day during his early days of recovery.
Jim Parsons and Rihanna
When working on the 2015 film Home together, Parsons and Rihanna quickly became close. Parsons was seen on several talk shows to promote the movie, saying Rihanna is the “best listener” on The Talk and again gushing over her on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. With her background in beauty and music and his portrayal of a nerdy genius on The Big Bang Theory, we love how these two prove that opposites attract.
Meryl Streep and 50 Cent
This pair first met at a Lakers-Knicks game in Madison Square Garden in 2014 and have attended games together since. Apparently, 50 Cent was starstruck by Streep, admitting on The Rachael Ray Show that sitting with her made him feel “normal again” in 2016.
Kris Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence
Meeting at JLaw’s 25th birthday celebration, Jenner has quickly become close with the Hunger Games actress over the years. At the party, Jenner came as a surprise invite and presented Lawrence her cake. Now, Jenner considers her family, as she called Lawrence her “favorite daughter” on her Instagram story last year.
Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg
Stewart met Snoop Dogg back in 2008 when he made a guest appearance on The Martha Stewart Show. He reappeared on the show a year later and they have now partnered for several projects, from hosting their 2016 VH1 show Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party to hosting the 2021 Puppy Bowl together.
Pitbull and John Travolta
Travolta and Pitbull are so close that the famed actor shaved his head because of Mr. Worldwide. According to an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2019, Travolta revealed that the Latinx singer inspired him to go bald. Travolta also guest-starred in Pitbull’s music video for “3 to Tango” in 2019.
Kim Kardashian and Serena Williams
Believe it or not, these stars met in 2002 when Kardashian was working for the tennis champion. Before Kardashian was famous, she would organize and clean out different celebrities’ closets. While their relationship was professional at first, they quickly became inseparable friends.
Meghan Markle and Priyanka Chopra
Blake Lively and Florence Welch
Longtime besties Lively and Welch, of Florence and the Machine, have been through it all together. The actress attended all of Welch’s U.S. shows when they were on tour in 2011 and she even hooked her up with a guest spot on Gossip Girl. Even cuter, Welch sang at Lively’s wedding to Ryan Reynolds in 2012.
Matt LeBlanc and Emilia Clarke
The Friends and Game of Thrones stars were always fans of each other, as seen in their 2016 guest appearance on The Graham Norton Show together. The most memorable moment on the show was when Clarke asked if LeBlanc would “ask her how she’s doing,” requesting a real-life Friends reference. We would definitely do the same in her position.
Rashida Jones and Natalie Portman
