The Britney Spears Musical Has an Official Premiere Date
Once Upon a One More Time, featuring music from the pop icon, finally has a premiere date after being postponed due to COVID-19.
Mark your calendars for November—after being postponed due to the pandemic, Britney Spears' cheekily-named musical will open at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington D.C. at the end of this year. Once Upon a One More Time is inspired by Spears' music catalogue, featuring 23 of the pop diva's songs.
The musical, backed by writer Jon Hartmere and directors and choreographers Keone and Mari Madrid, will center around themes of second- and third-wave feminism. The script follows the story of a magical book club meeting between fairy princesses. Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty will be in attendance, guided by a rogue fairy godmother as they explore The Feminine Mystique.
“These women have been in this hermetically sealed world, and then they start to get deeper into modern ideas—second- and third-wave feminism—and also explore how stories are passed down to us, and where we get our norms from,” Hartmere told The Guardian. “But it’s also superfun and funny.”
Sadly, Miss Spears herself will not be a part of the production, but she is in full support of the Broadway show.
“I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs—especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore,” said Spears. “This is a dream come true for me!”
