Two years after the release of the Grammy award-winning hit, Harry Styles has finally admitted the true meaning behind his song "Watermelon Sugar."

"This song is about … it doesn’t really matter what it’s about," the former One direction member teased during a performance in Nashville. "It’s about, uh, the sweetness of life."

He finally relented, “It’s also about the female orgasm, but that’s totally different. It’s not really relevant.”

Originally released in November 2019, the song includes lyrics such as, "I just wanna taste it / Watermelon sugar high" and "Tastes like strawberries / On a summer evenin' / And it sounds just like a song / I want your belly / And that summer feelin' / I don't know if I could ever go without."

Since its release, fans have theorized different meanings behind the song, often referencing the multiple sexual innuendos within the lyrics and the music video (which the singer himself dedicated to "touching"). During an interview with Zane Lowe, the DJ asked Styles if the lyrics were about "the joys of mutually appreciated oral pleasure," to which the singer played coy in response.

"Is that what it's about? I don't know," the singer answered.

Styles also talked about the song during his "Tiny Desk Performance" on NPR where he vaguely talked around the true meaning. "It’s kind of about that initial, I guess, euphoria of when you start seeing someone or sleeping with someone or just like being around someone and you have that kind of excitement about them," he said.
