8 Things to Know About Pauline Chalamet
We all love her on HBO Max's The Sex Lives of College Girls, but Pauline Chalamet has so much more up her sleeve.
Pauline Chalamet made her acting debut in Judd Apatow's The King of Staten Island, and ever since then, we have not gotten enough of her. Her recent role as, Kimberly, in Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble's hit HBO Max show, The Sex Lives of College Girls, reaffirmed her star power. From her childhood dream of being a ballerina to her love of both sides of the camera, Chalamet does it all. In honor of the actress's 31st birthday, L'OFFICIEL has rounded up eight things to know about Pauline Chalamet.
She is Timothée Chalamet's older sister.
Timothée Chalamet is this generation's ultimate heartthrob. Just by being his older sister, Pauline stole all of our hearts. According to them, the siblings are super close. Often being sighted supporting one another at premieres, the two actors are taking over Hollywood.
She lives in Paris.
Chalamet has dual citizenship in both the U.S. and France. Because her father, Marc Chalamet, is originally French, she grew up speaking the language and now lives in Paris permanently. Though she grew up in New York City's Hell's Kitchen, Chalamet says that Paris feels like home. When she first moved there, Chalamet acted in many French short films, such as Agnès et Milane, showcasing her bilingualism.
She has other family in the film industry.
Though her father is an editor for the United Nations, Chalamet's mom, Nicole Flender, was a Broadway dancer. However, her family also has ties to the film industry. Chalamet's uncle, Rodman Flender, is a writer, director, and producer. Growing up with this exposure to the industry and its artistry opened the doors for Chalamet to experiment.
She loves both sides of the camera.
Though we mainly know her for her acting roles, Chalamet is extremely well-rounded in the film industry. She writes, produces, and even directs. In a 2021 interview with L'OFFICIEL, she said she "love[s] both" being in front of the camera and behind it. She explains that when she's in front of the camera, she is absolutely amazed by the technical and production side of things. But when she is behind it, she is enthralled by the work and artistry of actors.
She's an avid reader.
In her free time, Chalamet loves to read. Often posting her current reads on Instagram, Chalamet keeps up to date with novels and political books, both in French and English. She told W Magazine in 2021 that she tries to read one book each week.
She wanted to be a ballerina.
Before she fell in love with acting and film production, Chalamet wanted to be a ballerina. As a child, she attended the School of American Ballet in New York City. SAB is a prestigious ballet school founded by the iconic George Balanchine: it ties directly to New York City Ballet. However, she decided this passion wasn't for her when she realized that she still wanted to use her voice, something that ballet does not allow. This is where her love for acting began.
She's the founder of a production company.
In 2019, Chalamet co-founded the production company Gummy Films. Her company has produced narrative short films and features such as What Doesn't Float and Lemon Tree.
She thoroughly researched egg donation for The Sex Lives of College Girls.
In The Sex Lives of College Girls, Chalamet's character, Kimberly, decides to sell her eggs to make some extra money. Mindy Kaling, one of the show's creators, was very interested in this concept. Chalamet explained in an interview with Variety that before she was to play this part, she wanted to better understand the process: “It’s not an anodyne decision. You’re putting hormones into your body to super-produce eggs, and she’s doing all this so that she can stay in school.”
