Margot Robbie is Barbie in First Photo From New Greta Gerwig Movie
Margot Robbie will play the most famous doll in the world in a new film directed by Greta Gerwig.
It took a while, but it's coming: Margot Robbie has been announced as Barbie in a live-action film that Warner Bros. and Mattel have promised to make it there in 2019. Despite all the suspense in recent years, it wasn't until this week that the companies finally released the first image of the film.
In addition to playing Barbie, Robbie will also co-produce the film with her company, LuckyChap Entertainment, alongside her husband, Tom Ackerley, while Little Women director Greta Gerwig has signed on to helm the project. The first image was released during CinemaCon 2022.
In a statement, Robbie said that she admires Barbie for fostering trust, curiosity, and communication during childhood and empowering children to imagine themselves in aspirational roles, from princess to president. She also added, "I am so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences around the world."
Ryan Gosling has been cast to play Ken, Barbie's boyfriend. Additionally, the film will also feature Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, Hari Nef, Will Ferrell, and Alexandra Shipp. In addition to the cast lineup, it was also announced that the project is expected to hit theaters in July 2023.
