Get a First Look at Ryan Gosling's Solo Song in Upcoming 'Barbie' Film

Ever since news broke out in 2019 that Margot Robbie would be playing the role of the iconic Malibu Barbie doll in a live-action Barbie film, fans have been excited to learn everything to know about the movie. There have been several animated Barbie movies in the last 20 years, but according to Robbie, the film slated to release in July 2023 will be "the thing you didn't know you wanted."

Director Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) will be adapting the film from a script she wrote with her husband, filmmaker Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story). Co-producers include Warner Bros., Mattel, and Robbie's production company, LuckyChap Entertainment. 

While many details are still under wraps, here is everything we know about Gerwig's Barbie film.

Barbie's never-ending star A-list cast has made it one of the most anticipated films of the year. 

Two-time Oscar nominee Robbie stars as the blonde fashion doll alongside Golden Globe winner Ryan Gosling, who will play her longtime boyfriend, Ken. This classic couple needs no introduction, but it will be interesting to see who else appears from the nostalgic line of dolls. 

In April, comedian Will Ferrell also announced he was joining Gerwig's film as the CEO of a toy company, a nod to Mattel, which manufactures Barbie dolls in real life.

Saoirse Ronan, Robbie's Mary Queen of Scots co-star and Gerwig's frequent collaborator, was slated to make a cameo in the film, but scheduling conflicts hampered that possibility.  "I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there," Ronan told People. "There was a whole character I was going to play — another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn't do it." However, Ronan did say that she has been in contact with Gerwig about slipping into a reshoot.

On April 4, it was also officially announced that three-time Grammy Award winner Dua Lipa is joining the cast as well, so that has made us even more excited for what's the come. In case you were wondering, yes, Lipa will be performing a song on the official soundtrack titled "Dance The Night."

Other cast members include Sex-Education stars Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, and Emma Mackey, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Robbie. The star-studded cast doesn't end there, as several other high-profile actors have signed onto the project, including Issa Rae (Insecure), Michael Cera (Superbad), Kingsley Ben-Adir (High Fidelity), Rhea Perlman, Ritu Arya, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, and Jamie Demetriou.

In a recent interview with Cinema Blend Gerwig revealed that she almost had Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan have cameo appearances in the Barbie movie. Ultimately both of them were unavailable at the time.

The Barbie movie plot can be summarized as a journey of self-discovery. Barbie is kicked out of Barbieland for being unconventional and breaking the rules of what a doll is supposed to look/act like. She goes on a quest to the real world, where she realizes that the concepts of perfection and happiness are not in line with what she previously thought and has to save Barbieland before it's too late.

On the 2023 Golden Globes red carpet, Robbie told E News that the film will "blow your mind" and has "different vibes" from her recent Babylon film. In a 2022 interview with WSJ Magazine, Ferrell also shared some additional teasers about the film: "It's a loving homage to the brand and, at the same time, couldn't be more satirical—just an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie's criticized and yet why every little girl still wants to play with Barbie."

While the cast crew has been good at keeping many details about the Barbie movie under wraps, we do know that Gosling has a solo musical number titled "Just Ken." On July 10, Warner Bros. Pictures released a first look at the song, and let's just say we may see a Grammy award in Gosling's future.
