Say Goodbye to the Golden Globes
For the first time, the 2022 Golden Globe will not be televised.
One of the biggest scandals is plaguing the Golden Globes, considered the second most important award in Hollywood, second only to the Oscars .
NBC announced this week that it will not broadcast the event in 2022 because of accusations against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the association that organizes the Golden Globes. These charges call out the HFPA for a lack of diversity on the committee and questionable financial practices.
“We continue to believe that HFPA is committed to significant reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023," NBC said in a statement.
The HFPA was criticized earlier this year for an article published by the Los Angeles Times that revealed that none of its 87 members are Black, a gross lack of representation in today's political and social scene. The group announced a plan to add more diverse members, however, NBC was "concerned" that there was no timetable to show these changes and chose not to broadcast the event. The organization also faces claims of buying votes in exchange for gifts and travel.
Amidst this, industry insiders began boycotting the Golden Globes: Tom Cruise returned the three awards; Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo also encouraged their colleagues to stop supporting the awards; and Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia also boycotted the association until changes are actually implemented.
