Gal Gadot Says Princess Diana Inspired Her 'Wonder Woman' Character
The actress was inspired by a documentary about the late princess.
It seems Wonder Woman's pseudonym Diana Prince is more than just an alter ego. Actress Gal Gadot recently revealed during a virtual roundtable for Vanity Fair's "Cocktail Hour Live" that the late Princess Diana was a key inspiration for her Wonder Woman performance. “I remember watching a documentary about Princess Diana and there was a part where they said she was full of compassion and always cared for the people and that was like, ‘Ding, ding, ding,’ that should be the Wonder Woman we have,” said Gadot.
The actress, who recently announced she was pregnant with her third child following her 2021 Golden Globes appearance, went on to explain how the princess's charitable spirit and connection to people—hence, her moniker "the People's Princess"—laid the groundwork for her take on the Amazonian superhero. In the original film and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984, the titular character is often seen using her powers for the benefit of others, even outside of her world-saving duties.
"How can you connect to a goddess that’s super strong and has it all and [is] super perfect?” Gadot said of her DC Comics character. “I wanted to show her vulnerabilities and heart.”
Just after the release of the most recent installment of the Wonder Woman series back in December, film executives revealed that a third movie is already underway. At the time, Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich revealed, “As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy."
