Everything We Know About Kate Winslet's New Movie, 'LEE'
Set to release in September of this year, Winslet's newest film tells the story of Elizabeth 'Lee' Miller.
Elizabeth 'Lee' Miller was an American fashion model who came up in the 1920s New York City fashion scene before moving to Paris to pursue her dreams of art and fashion photography. When WWII began, Miller became Vogue's correspondent, covering major events such as the London Blitz and the Allies' arrival at Dachau and Buchenwald.
After reading a book about Miller's life, actor and director Kate Winslet became intrigued and began developing a project about her alongside cinematographer Ellen Kuras. The project was initially announced back in 2015 to major fanfare, but has faced struggles since. Several script rewrites and pushback from production have led to delays, but Winslet has stayed steadfast in her intent to tell Miller's story.
In an interview with Vogue, Winslet revealed the extent to which she was underestimated and patronized by film directors and executives. She recalled one director who told her, "Listen, you do my film, and I'll get your little Lee funded." Winslet, at the height of the struggle to produce the film, was even forced to cover two weeks of wages with her own money.
The first major cast announcement was made in 2021, listing a star-studded lineup of industry and fan favorites alike. Among these are Josh O'Connor (Challengers, Knives Out 3), Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), Alexander Skarsgård (Tarzan, Infinity Pool), and Jude Law (The Holiday, Firebrand).
Information has been largely kept under wraps, but today, the first official poster was released, promising a war-hardened Lee.
The film's screenplay is adapted from the book The Lives of Lee Miller, written by Miller's son, Antony Penrose. Penrose has been consistently supportive of the production, providing support and access to his mother's unpublished works.
The film is set to theatrically release on September 27th with Sky Cinema.
