Style Advice We Can All Take from 'Seinfeld'
The award-winning sitcom has had some surprisingly stylish moments.
Though it didn't win as many awards for its costume design as its writing, the always hilarious Seinfeld can actually teach us a few style lessons with its quintessial '90s looks from Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer. While we have plenty of new movies and shows to binge in quarantine, it's time to scope out the style in one of the funniest shows of all time, with looks that are just as timeless as the jokes. While Jerry Seinfeld rocked some classic '90s street style in flannel and chambray, Elaine mixed and matched flowy floral skirts with power blazers, Kramer embraced his kookiness in printed button ups, and George got into some interesting fads in addition to his signature hairstyle - or lack thereof. Now, we love an absolutely over-the-top, high fashion look, but Seinfeld proves that, sometimes, the best looks are built on timeless staples.
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld may not have been as preoccupied with his style as he was with the everyday craziness that surrounded him, but his minimalist style as his character of the same name definitely contributes to his fashion appeal. Seinfeld's effortless outfits, not to mention his love of dad sneakers, have made his style representative of the era and often replicated today.
Before she was the always classy Vice President Selina Meyer on HBO's Veep, Julia Louise-Dreyfus knew how to deliver a classic '90s tailored look as the hard-working city-girl Elaine Benes. With big hair and even bigger shoulder pads, the outspoken Elaine will always be a fashion icon for her looks that were the perfect balance of polished and messy.
Who knew George Costanza invented the oversized puffy coat trend? George's lasting fashion influence hasn't stopped there as he has become somewhat of an icon for the hypebeast community today. Jason Alexander's character had a fun love of accessories, whether it was his cossack hat, fanny packs, plaid caps, or double cross bodies, fashion lovers today can certainly appreciate George's willingness to try out different trends and accessories (haven't we all struggled to keep up with the latest fads?), even if they made him the butt of the joke from time to time.
Saving the most stylish for last, the always out-there Cosmo Kramer's eccentricity shone through in his style, captivating fans with his wacky prints, and you know we love a good print. Played by Michael Richards, the legendary Kramer's atypical fashion sense is just part of what we love about the Jerry Seinfeld's eclectic neighbor.
While there's something to appreciate in each character's wardrobe, the most timeless advice we can take from Seinfeld's style is to never be too serious with our own style. Fashion is one of the most powerful tools of self-expression, so why not have a sense of humor with the things we wear?
