The early aughts trend gets couture-level upgrades for the 2021 Oscars.

Bare midriffs were a common red carpet feature in the early 2000s, often accompanied by low-rise pants and maybe even some butterfly clips in the hair. The exposed torso is again calling attention to some of the biggest stars at tonight's 2021 Oscars. From just a sliver to a full side cutout, the bare midriff proved that sometimes less is more.

Zendaya and her image architect, aka stylist, Law Roach create a stand-out style moment with a citrus-yellow custom Valentino gown paired with Bulgari jewels. Sharing her arrival to the red carpet, Roach captured the dress in motion as Zendaya stepped out with a matching face mask and Jimmy Choo platform heels.

Meanwhile, Carey Mulligan and Andra Day both opt for a combination of two major red carpet trends of the evening. In addition to sporting shimmery golden ensembles, the leading ladies show off their midriffs with Mulligan in Valentino Haute Couture and Day in Vera Wang Haute Couture. The two looks show the range of the torso-baring look, from a form-fitting sleek option to the full-skirted ballgown.

Pieces of a Woman actress Vanessa Kirby gives just a glimpse of her midriff in a pale pink Gucci gown. A plunging sweetheart neckline and column silhouette with a generous train give the minimal dress the elegant wow-factor fitting for Hollywood's biggest night.

Whether showing a little or a lot, the exposed midriff trend ushers in summer style, and the elevated takes seen on the red carpet give the look the Hollywood stamp of approval.
