Are Ugg's Tasmans Worth the Hype? A Fashion Girl's Hot Take

Uggs have never appealed to my personal style, but the buzzy Tasman design made me curious to finally try the cozy kicks.

When I mention that I’ve never owned Ugg shoes, it almost sounds like a political statement. Making it through middle school and into adult life without ever asking for a pair of those cozy shoes feels almost as rare as never having watched a Real Housewives episode (hi, again). Although being raised in Argentina may have something to do with it, the Ugg craze did make it to my corner of the world—I never cared to jump on it... until recently.

While I appreciate the brand’s unique aesthetic and the impressive way it's evolved and expanded its products, I never truly understood the purpose of Ugg shoes, if I'm being honest. Having always lived in big, walkable cities, I’ve instinctively steered away from any high-maintenance fabrics my whole life. Plus, as a hopeless fashion girl, clothes that evoked a pajama look never felt too tempting. But lately, I couldn’t help but lust after some of the brand’s newest designs.

From creative new silhouettes to the expansion in color offering and trendy collaborations (Collina Strada, Telfar, Madhappy!), Uggs seem to be looking better than ever. Plus, TikTok creators and style icons alike keep wearing seamlessly incorporating them into their everyday looks. I gave the buzzy Ugg Tasman slippers a try. Keep scrolling for my honest review.

What I Like About the Ugg Tasman Slippers

I let the social media hype guide my choice and went for a cozy pair of Tasmans in the trendy sand and cherry shade. Although choosing a sleeper design as my first Ugg pair may not have been the smartest choice, having seen fashion gurus like Dua Lipa effortlessly styling them into their cool-girl looks was my ultimate source of inspiration. Unlike some of the bolder, louder designs, the Tasmans seemed to go with anything. Plus, who doesn’t love an easy slip-on silhouette?

The first time I stepped out of my New York apartment in my brand-new Ugg shoes, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had accidentally forgotten to swap out my slippers. Although they felt comfortable as I walked, they felt a bit too comfortable—so much so that I began to wonder if I should have kept them as my indoor shoes instead. The thought of walking through the Big Apple's dirty streets and stepping into the buzzy subway in suede and wool footwear was already swirling in my head by the time I made it one block out. As I struggled to shake off that feeling—people do it everyday, after all—I was determined to embrace the cozy vibe, no matter what the city threw my way. The lightweight outsole and cozy plush wool lining helped.

Cons: Breaking in the Boots

While I was happy to discover that Tasmans are true to size, the fit wasn’t fully what I expected. Due to the design’s low ankle support, I found my heels slipping out of the shoe quite often. When turning to TikTok for answers (or at least some reassurance), multiple shared that Ugg shoes are meant to form to your feet, and affirmed it was going to take some time before the inside plush flattens and molds. I had no choice but to trust the process.

But perhaps the tricky fit wasn’t the most challenging part of my Ugg journey—finding the right occasion to wear them was. While I enjoyed wearing my Tasmans on a lazy Sunday afternoon, when my biggest outings were grabbing coffee and restocking my fridge, I still struggle to see Ugg's footwear as anything more than an errands shoe—a cool one, but an errands shoe nonetheless. Even for a relaxed brunch with friends, I’m not sure I can personally pull off the laid-back coolness to make these work.

Final Thoughts

Nevertheless, fashion tastemakers like Elsa Hosk and Gigi Hadid don't seem to share my sentiment. Whether it’s paired with an oversized blazer or styled with ripped jeans and fitted cardigans, cool girls have welcomed Ugg’s Tasman slippers with open arms. Whether you are shopping for aesthetic, comfort, or function, the Southern California-based brand has a shoe for everyone.

Inspired by their eclectic looks and unapologetic styling, I’m determined to discover how to incorporate Ugg shoes into my own style and wardrobe. Who knows? Maybe I just need to try out a few more designs.
