Paris-based label Y/Project, which sits in an echelon of cool reserved for the likes of Rihanna and Solange, has created its own iteration of Middle America’s winter footwear staple: the UGG boot. Not one for minimalism, Y/Project designer Glenn Martens leaned in hard and presented a thigh-high version for his Fall 2018 collection — begging the question is this fashion or function?
On his collaboration, Martens says, “Putting on UGGs is like putting your foot in a warm pot of butter, and I thought why not elevate that and immerse your full legs!” How practical!
The collaboration follows perfectly in line with a recent reprisal of ugly as luxury, similar to Balenciaga’s platform Crocs. Further, UGG is no stranger to working with luxury designers, having recently worked with Jeremy Scott on a cobalt blue pair with painted on flames. Those hit stores this spring.
Given the price point of Y/Project (usually in the hundreds and thousands), it’s likely you won’t find these thigh-high bad boys stomping around a suburban college campus come fall. You can certainly expect them in New York City.
