Teen Fashion Trends by the Decade
Take a look at how teen fashion trends have evolved over time.
While today's teens live out their coming of age period largely online with the rise of social media, fashion trends and the way they shift and evolve, have reflected just that. With TikTok serving as a readily-accessible tool to reach to millions all over the world, users who are otherwise strangers have connected over their niche styles, with short clips of outfits and fashion inspiration gaining traction that ultimately start decade-defining trends and blend Gen Z's different tastes into a collective aesthetic. As we wait to see what kind of fashion the 2020s bring as a whole, L'OFFICIEL looks back at styles that dominated teen spheres in the past.
1970s
Carried over from the '60s, elements of hippie fashion largely influenced teens' style in the '70s. Earthy colors—burnt siennas, golden yellows, and mossy greens—dominated the general color palette, seen in pieces like courduroy bell bottoms and patchwork garments.
1980s
The '80s were about everything bold—big hair, neon colors, and exaggerated silhouettes. Teens in the decade opted for oversized pieces—stone washed denim jackets, large sweaters worn off the shoulder, and shoulder pads aplenty. Teens' style was largely influenced by pop culture and music, mimicking the fashion seen on MTV, which launched in 1981.

2000s
Now beloved as the Y2K aesthetic, teen fashion in the 2000s was delightfully over-the-top, with lots of layers and statement accessories. Low-rise pants and mini skirts were go-to bottoms, and Juicy Couture tracksuits and Ugg boots were designer must-haves.
