Just the sound of Stevie Nicks’ raspy voice has a tendency to conjure up an image of the legendary rock icon swirling about onstage, lost within a sea of billowing velvet, chiffon, lace, and fringe. Of course, it wouldn’t be Stevie’s signature style without her top hat and tambourine in tow.

In 1975, the mystical singer-songwriter joined the band that would come to be her claim to fame, Fleetwood Mac, alongside her longtime partner, both romantically and musically, Lindsey Buckingham. At 18, shortly after meeting Buckingham, the two partook in a very on-again/off-again relationship while collaborating in his first band, Fritz, and eventually went on their own as Buckingham Nicks. After the couple joined Mick Fleetwood, and John and Christine McVie, Fleetwood Mac would go on to produce some of the most celebrated music of their time, with albums like 1975’s eponymous record Fleetwood Mac and 1977’s Rumours setting the stage for Nicks’ equally impressive solo career.

Inspiring the likes of Harry Styles, Florence Welch, and Miley Cyrus, Nicks is as relevant as ever. Besides her music (and becoming a TikTok star), the star continues to influence on the fashion front. Since the beginning of her inimitable rock ‘n’ roll tenure, Nicks has graced the stage in her quintessentially bohemian style, synonymous with the 1970s. With the help of long-time stylist and designer Margi Kent, the songstress has kept her unique sense of witchy style intact throughout the years, forgoing any fleeting fads. Her trademark flowing celestial silhouettes, draping bell sleeves, ponchos, sweeping shawls, stone pendants, and crystal jewelry became a form of a security blanket for Nicks. “I needed a uniform,” she once said. “I’ll be very, very sexy under 18 pounds of chiffon and lace and velvet. And nobody will know who I really am.”

In acknowledgment of her impact in both music and fashion, L’OFFICIEL looks back on the dreamiest throwback photos of young Stevie Nicks.
