A Look Back at Selena's Stunning Outfits
On the late singer's birthday, reminisce on her sparkling style and stage looks.
Ever since she was a little girl, Selena Quintanilla was destined for musical stardom. Born to Mexican American parents in Lake Jackson, Texas on this day in 1971, Selena spent her young years performing along with her brother Abraham and sister Suzette who together formed a family band called Selena Y Los Dinos.
Although Selena grew up speaking English, her father and former musician Abraham Quintanilla taught her to sing traditional Spanish songs which she often sang at restaurants, small wedding venues, and nightclubs in Texas. It wasn’t until the late ‘80s that Selena’s talent skyrocketed and she became a mononymous star. Her acclaim was solidified when she was awarded Female Vocalist of the Year and Performer of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards at the age of 15.
Aside from her musical talent, Selena had a keen eye for fashion. She helped her mother design her stage outfits and also opened up several clothing boutiques in Texas. Defined by colorful two-piece sets, flared pants, and bedazzled bralettes, Selena’s style literally shined.
Her tragic death at the age of 24 shocked the world, leaving the entire Latin community heartbroken. Despite her short life, the singer’s outstanding vocals and glamorous style have lived on. Today, she is remembered as the Queen of Tejano Music, her popular hit songs "Amor Prohibido" (1994) and "Como La Flor" (1992) still keeping her legacy alive. Last year, her life was also memorialized in the Netflix show Selena: The Series.
On her birthday, L’OFFICIEL remembers the late singer’s iconic style with a round-up of her most emblematic fashion looks.
