What began as a 17th-century shoe embellishment among Britain's elite evolved into an ‘80s prom dress essential. Lest we forget Carrie Bradshaw circa Sex and the City season three, floral details were the It girl accessory in the early aughts. Now, rosettes are making their return once again.
Fabricated florals appeared on dresses, blazers, and chokers everywhere from Paris to New York during the Spring/Summer 2023 season. After seeing the trend progress in recent Fall/Winter 2023 shows, it's safe to say that rosettes are staying for good this time—which is very exciting.
Rosettes are a wearable, versatile accessory. The rosette can be fanciful and sweet, as established by Dries Van Noten's Spring/Summer 2023 collection, or cheekily subversive, like when Acne Studios placed fabric roses on each breast that same season. Easily combined with any look, rosettes are a cheerful way of adding textural interest to otherwise simplistic outfits. The floral detail also offers ample opportunity to play with scale, as evidenced by the partial facial obstruction of Harry Styles when he wore his own ultra-oversized take to the BRITs.
The rosette isn’t anything new, and the concept of florals in spring certainly isn’t either. What is novel though is the detail’s recent reinvention, both on the runway and beyond. With warmer days shortly upon us, shop our favorite rosette transformations for the coming season.
