This year, due to its built-in practicality and chicness, fashion houses have declared the peacoat as the outwear you need lined up in your fall wardrobe.
While the Dutch invention was once exclusively a staple of naval duty outerwear, it has since evolved from a durable outer garment to a highly wearable statement piece. Designers have technically elevated it with innovative materials and embellishments and impeccably controlled silhouettes, while preserving its clear-cut utilitarian quality. On the one hand, the modern peacoat can is endlessly practical: goes with everything while protecting you from the elements. However, its availability in a mosaic of colorways, fabrics, and styles also renders it the ideal staple for the sartorially bold.
In their Fall/Winter 2024 collections, brands established a fresh wrap-port with the peacoat, reinventing the classic sophistication of the double-breasted, welt-pocket piece with exquisite craftsmanship, enticing textiles, and rich colors. Celine imbued refined daywear with new meaning with its finely-cropped pea coat that exhibited intriguing directional proportions. Meanwhile, Bottega Veneta created a sense of drama with its exaggerated silhouette, and Saint Laurent’s voluminous rubber peacoat added conspicuous energy to the ensemble. Gucci also refused to tailor to expectations with its mustard yellow slouchy-shoulder variant that carried a relaxed and whimsical attitude.
Whether you opt for a cocooning, toasty wool form or or a more fitted, embossed leather adaption, the peacoat is the anchor piece you need for any occasion. It can offer balance when worn over a sultry mini dress. Or it can allow you to be playful and establish visual interest by mixing a boldly colored silhouette with an otherwise neutral outfit. Pair it with timeless Mary Janes for the daytime or slingback stilettos to transition into nighttime territory. With its compelling range in depth and dimension, the peacoat will flawlessly pull together any look this fall.
