No matter what year we’re ringing in, New Year’s Eve has always been the consummate moment for glitz, glamour, and over-the-top celebration. In order to fête in style, partygoers choose punchy, exuberant ensembles to match the excitement and promise of the turn of the calendar page. Decades come and go, but some things never change: Playful extravagance is the common thread that weaves through past, present, and future iterations of the quintessential New Year’s Eve look. Sequins, feathers, metallics, sheer, ruffles, and satin are all in steady rotation.

Celebration was marked by intricate beading and jewels in both the 1920s and ‘60s, and by floor-length, draped gowns by Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain in the ‘50s. The ‘70s heralded satiny simplicity, with sweeping gowns and androg- ynous silk suiting; geometric silhouettes defined the ‘80s, and the mirrored minis of the Y2K era are back once again. Though times will continue to change, one thing always stays the same: Celebratory champagne is best popped at 11:59 p.m., while dripping in diamante and folded in (faux) fur.
