How Harry Styles Became Music's Best-Dressed Man

From chart-topping songs to his first Grammy win, Harry Styles continues to shake up the music industry with his angelic voice, as well as his dashing style.

You've listened to his songs, seen his album covers, and maybe Googled him a few (hundred) times, but today, on this holiest of days, we celebrate the birth of the singer, actor, fashion icon, and man of your dreams: Harry Styles. During his early days as a member of One Direction, the Gucci poster boy found a second voice in fashion, one which only became more prominent with the start of his solo career. In 2017, the L'OFFICIEL Hommes cover star released his debut, self-titled album, featuring hits like "Sign of the Times" and "Kiwi" (which may or may not be about his ex Kendall Jenner), while also showing off his acting skills in Christopher Nolan's war drama Dunkirk. No longer beheld by coordinating looks with his fellow bandmates, the singer showed off his burgeoning fashion sense at various press events, red carpets, and talk show appearances with a slate of eye-catching suits.

Within a span of two years, Styles cultivated an image for himself as one of music's best-dressed men, known for his '70s-inspired suits (often of the Gucci persuasion) and bold color choices. In 2019, the singer, in coordination with Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, and Alessandro Michele, co-hosted the Met Gala, where he showcased his gender-fluid aesthetic in a sheer pussy bow blouse. Later that year, surrounding the release of his Grammy-nominated sophomore album Fine Line, Styles continued to defy stereotypes with sparkly jumpsuits and lace moments punctuated by kitschy accessories and wide-legged silhouettes. In the throes of a pandemic-induced postponed tour, the "Watermelon Sugar" singer still managed to grace the cover of Vogue's December 2020 issue—the magazine's first solo male cover star—in a custom Gucci gown, despite criticism from conservative spokespeople.

After receiving the all-clear to travel, Styles embarked on Love on Tour, his ongoing multi-continental tour to promote Fine Line and Harry's House. His opulent ensembles ranged from his signature feathers and wide-legged pants to full-on costumes. Each night has been an opportunity for Styles to showcase the singular style he's spent the last few years refining.

On his birthday, L'OFFICIEL celebrates Styles' 29th year around the sun by remembering some of his most memorable outfits.
