When it comes to minimalist style, one actress truly epitomized this aesthetic throughout the ’90s: Gwyneth Paltrow. With her silky matching sets, satin slip dresses, and neutral color schemes, Paltrow knew how to showcase effortless ensembles both on and off the red carpet.

The actress starred in multiple films throughout the ’90s, including Emma, Great Expectations, and Se7en. In 1999, Paltrow received an Academy Award for her portrayal as Viola de Lesseps in Shakespeare in Love; she wore her famous bubblegum pink Ralph Lauren gown while accepting the Oscar.

Later in the early 2000s, Paltrow continued to star in many popular films, particularly Wes Anderson’s 2001 film, The Royal Tenenbaums. With a cigarette in one hand and her Hermès Birkin nestled in the crook of her arm, Paltrow’s character, Margot Tenenbaum, is considered one of Anderson’s most iconic characters.

Outside of acting, Paltrow is the founder and CEO of Goop, a wellness brand known for its non-toxic beauty products and vagina-scented candles. She has also published several New York Times bestselling cookbooks, most of which focus on clean eating and a healthy lifestyle.

In celebration of Paltrow’s 50th birthday, take a look at some of her most fashionable looks from the ’90s.
