The Style Evolution of 'Gossip Girl's Jenny Humphrey
Spotted: L'OFFICIEL breaking down Jenny Humphrey's style evolution on actress Taylor Momsen's 29th birthday.
Little J, or the actress who played Little J, isn't so little anymore. The How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Gossip Girl actress turned musician Taylor Momsen turns 29 today. And what better way to celebrate than taking a look back at some of her best Jenny Humphrey looks? From her pastel and plaid wearing days to her smokey eye and leather jacket aesthetic, L'OFFICIEL analyzes the character's style evolution below.
The Beginning.
In the first season and into parts of the second season of Gossip Girl, Little J really just wants to fit in with Blair Waldorf and her Upper East Side minions. Not only does this affect her attitude and actions, but it also affects her style. Fans see Jenny in glitzy, and semi-glamorous clothes—remember: she often made her own versions to keep up with the wealthy Upper East Siders. Often in light colors, preppy patterns, and light makeup to give her an innocent look, little J’s style is more a reflection of those around her, than herself.
The First Shift.
In Season 2, Jenny’s style starts to evolve. Instead of focusing on lighter and brighter colors, the wannabe fashion designer opts for darker colors and patterns, like black and gray, often incorporated with leather or other edgy style elements. But her clothes weren’t the only thing that changed. Instead of opting for flouncy curls, like in season one, she instead sports a straighter, edgier bob with a heavier eye makeup look.
A Mixture of Styles.
As the show progresses, Jenny really starts to nail her own personal aesthetic. Not only does she switch up her lip color and opt for a darker, more crimson shade, but she also appears to incorporate more elements of the typical, Upper East Side wardrobe. Still wearing leather and edgy elements, like fishnets, she also adds chunky necklaces and accessories back into the mix. Instead of trying to fit in, she blends both of her worlds—going to school and socializing with the Upper East Siders, while living in Brooklyn with a more, casual, less glitzy family—seamlessly into her style.
The Ending.
In Season 4, Jenny leaves New York City and is virtually absent for the rest of the show. However, in the show's finale, she makes a special appearance at Dan and Serena's wedding. While we can't be exactly sure how much of her style has changed, if at all, fans see Jenny in a neutral dress with nude shoes—quite the contrast from what she used to be spotted in. She also ditched the red lip. But one thing's the same: she's still rocking that smokey eye makeup look.
