Chewed Gum Takes the Spotlight for Acne Studios
It's not the first time that the Swedish brand takes an artful route to a collection, but it's definitely a first to paste pieces of chewing gums and receipts on hoodies. For Spring 2018, Acne Studios Blå Konst looks to Gabriel Kuri, a Mexican-born sculptor currently residing in Brussels. The artist is known to have interest in the most common of objects (hence gums and receipts), and very basic apparels like hooded-sweatshirts, t-shirts, and fluid dresses.
“I love how Gabriel Kuri looks at the world. He brings together objects and materials to tell his own story, which resonates with how we do things at Acne Studios Blå Konst. It is about examining and celebrating the everyday and the beauty of specific design," said creative director Jonny Johansson in a press statement.
In celebration of the launch, Kuri created ten pieces of art for Acne Studios Blå Konst that will be displayed in key stores around the world. The art represents his (fashionable) interpretation of a Chinese joss paper offering, which brings the idea of form, function, and social currency. The "offering" is sort of a self-portrait of the artist´s current life, as well as his tokens of aspiration and longing.
Acne Studios Blå Konst Spring 2018 launches today, March 15. See Kuri's artwork and looks from the collection below:
