While origins of the first American flag design are a bit murky—popular legend suggests seamstress Betsy Ross sewed the first flag in May 1776—the Stars and Stripes has undoubtedly become a symbol of Americana aspirations. Its 13 stripes represent the original colonies and the 50 stars stand for each state, while its red, white, and blue stand for valour, purity, and justice, respectively. With its iconic design, it's no surprise that Old Glory has inspired many runway looks, from the all-American Tommy Hilfiger to French fashion house Balmain
