Alexander McQueen Admires the Natural World with 'Anemones' for Fall/Winter 2021
Alexander McQueen's Fall/Winter 2021 collection uses Paolo Roversi's photographic language to capture nature's restorative essence.
Sarah Burton displays a resilient attitude by creating a sophisticated yet meaningful image with Alexander McQueen's Fall/Winter 2021 collection. Flowers have always been the hallmarks of the brand's heritage, specifically roses and poppies—symbols par excellence of the Maison's British design. For this season's "Anemones" show, silhouettes appear in a voluminous version: some more structured and others more fluctuating, just like the movement of sea anemones found splattered across the ocean floor.
Theatrical and romantic at the same time, the "Anemones" collection was presented with shots by Italian photographer Paolo Roversi through distinctive photographic language. Each look uses contrasting colors, Swarovski crystal embroidery, and inspiration from London's underground culture to birth a series of garments that offer Burton's own perspective on the healing power of nature while still maintaining the House's signature codes.
"It seems now is the time to heal, to breathe new life, to explore the echoes of the past to enrich our future. More than ever, a sense of humanity, of the team working together with one goal—to create something beautiful, something meaningful. It feels precious and important. We looked at water, for its healing properties, and anemones. Anemones are the most ephemeral flowers, here made permanent in cloth. Women who wear clothes become anemone almost like flowers, like their incarnation, their character—but amplified, rooted, radiant, and strong. " Sarah Burton, Creative Director.
