Should You Be Using Blue Shampoo?

If you’re a brunette who dyes your hair, you’ll want to pay attention.

Blondes don’t necessarily have more fun. Calling all brunettes who dye their hair—whether balayage, ombre, or traditional highlights—it’s time to introduce blue shampoo into your haircare routine.

No matter your hair color, the combination of lightening the tone, using regular shampoo every day, being in the sun, and heat styling will inevitably cause the color to change over time. For brunettes, orange and copper tones will be exposed, and for blondes, yellow tones can show up. Lightening your hair exposes your hair’s natural pigment, which is why colorists apply a gloss after treatment to tone down the exposed warmth. So, in order to cancel out the appearance of these warmer tones, blue shampoo is a must for brunettes.

Why Blue?

Blue shampoo is a type of shampoo with blue-violet pigments that neutralizes any brassy tones. It all goes back to elementary school art class—remember the rainbow color wheel? The complementary color to orange was blue, facing across the wheel from each other, and yellow’s complementary color was purple. That’s why blue shampoo is the solution to keeping a pure and light tone for brunettes, whereas purple shampoo is the key for blondes. Honestly, even if you’ve never dyed your hair before, blue shampoo can still be beneficial, since it can make your hair shinier and more vibrant.

How to Use Blue Shampoo

This type of shampoo should be used with less frequency than normal shampoo, about once or twice a week. While a normal shampoo should be applied on the scalp and roots, blue shampoo should be lathered all the way from root to tip so the blue pigments can spread out evenly and target all possible areas. Afterward, always use a deep conditioner to keep your hair hydrated and happy, and lastly, apply a leave-in oil or serum on your damp strands.
