How to Apply Blush to Flatter Your Face Shape

Placement matters.

For some, applying blush may seem like an afterthought. After all, the ubiquitous blush technique we’re probably most familiar with is to apply the color directly onto the apples of our cheeks. However, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to blush. Similar to contour and highlight, blush placement plays a major role in changing the overall look of your makeup and will vary depending on one’s face shape.

Thanks to TikTok, makeup artists and beauty amateurs alike have sparked the conversation of “proper” blush placement. Some prefer dragging their blush along the cheekbones for a lifted look, while others prefer the age-old technique of simply applying blush onto the apples of their cheeks for a natural wash of color.

So what is the “right” way to apply blush? Here, L’OFFICIEL breaks down everything there is to know about applying blush to best suit your face.

On the Apples of Your Cheeks

For a healthy, natural-looking glow from within, smile and swirl the blush directly on the apples of your cheeks. Accentuating this area will make the face appear fuller, making it best suited for those with angular faces seeking more volume to the cheeks. Kylie Jenner’s makeup artist MakeupByAriel prefers taking the blush from the apples of the cheeks and diffusing it close to the undereye for an even more youthful, “plump” look.

Along the Cheekbones

Inspired by the bold ‘80s and the face-shaping techniques popularized by drag queens, the blush technique known as “draping” has made its way into everyday wear. This method consists of dragging the blush across the cheekbones to create a “lifted” appearance that is flattering for all face shapes. Preferably with a powdered blush like the Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Blush, lightly sweep the color along your cheekbones (just above your contour) and blend up to the temples, creating a “C-shape” along the side of your face.

Across the Nose

Also known as the “drunk blush” look, this method of applying blush across the nose creates a naturally flushed appearance from within. Reminiscent of the naturally pink complexion that comes right after being blasted by a gust of cold wind, this technique creates a “cutesy” appearance that is suitable for all face types.

Along with your cheeks, apply the excess blush across the nose bridge, right where the sun hits. For this look, opt for a cream blush like Rare Beauty’s Stay Vulnerable Melting Cream Blush for a seamless, skin-like appearance.

All Over the Face

Suitable for all face types, this technique adds an all-over glow and sun-kissed look to the face. Lightly sweep the blush across your nose bridge and on the tops of your forehead, chin, and eyelids. To neutralize the harshness of the blush, this technique works best on top of a bronzer

Apply as a Bronzer

For those with rounder and fuller faces, applying a shimmery blush as a “bronzer” will give a more structured appearance to the face without contouring. TikTok creator Alena Victoria brings the blush up from the apples of her cheeks, past her cheekbones, and up to her temples, creating a “C-shape” to further lift and brighten the face.
