A Celebrity MUA's Eyeshadow Tricks for Hooded Eyes That Make Anything Possible
Kirin Bhatty's arsenal of tricks is why celebrity clients like Jenny Slate keep her on speed dial.
When a celebrity keeps a makeup artist on speed dial, you know they're doing a lot right. That's the case for Kirin Bhatty, who counts Jenny Slate among her clients. Of her many talents, Bhatty is particularly skilled at makeup looks on hooded eyes, which are a little more complex to worth with than eyes with full lids.
The TJ Maxx and Marshalls beauty expert understands that the sea of makeup tutorials and product launches online don’t always translate the same on hooded eyes. Trying certain tutorials can leave someone feeling a little frustrated or confused if their favorite influencer or MUA's beauty techniques don't work on them. But that’s the beauty of makeup—it’s all about experimenting and finding what works for you. Try every product that catches your eye and make it your own. There are no rules; whether you stick to traditional techniques or create something entirely unique, the key is to embrace your features and have fun with the process.

Hooded Eye Makeup Tips: Eyeshadow and Smoky Lids
Eyeshadow on hooded eyes requires some refinement, but Bhatty encourages embracing boldness without hesitation. “If something feels really bold to you—shadow or glitter—the great thing with a hooded eye is that you can actually put it on the lid and half of it will disappear,” she explains. So, you’ll have almost like a subtle way of experimenting with a new glitter or a new color.” For a more dramatic effect, Bhatty suggests using a lash curler to create the illusion of a bare eyelid when you’re truly going for something more eye-catching.
Drop shadow—the shadow underneath bottom lashes—can be key to bold experimentation. “You can really showcase a beautiful smudgy, smoky shadow there and a multitude of colors and textures,” says Bhatty. She also emphasizes the power of creams and liquids, especially on hooded eyes. “I love a textured lid, and when you have a hooded eye, you almost have that doll-eye effect, so everything goes back. Having a texture that glimmers every time you blink is so beautiful, especially on a hooded eye.” For an even bigger lid, she suggests stamping with a curler and blending upward for a seamless, elevated finish.
Hooded Eye Makeup Tips: Mascara Application
Mascara is an absolute must-have for hooded eyes. "Mascaras and eyeliners, as a hooded eye person myself, are my number one go-to," says Bhatty. To truly make your eyes pop, she employs a clever trick with an eyelash curler. "For hooded eyes, I take the curler at a slant,” she explains will open the eye up a bit more. A small change? Yes. But one that makes a big impact. For more defined lashes, Bhatty also recommends hybridizing mascaras. "I’ll often use a regular or water-resistant mascara on the top lashes, but for the bottom, I always go for waterproof." The right products and techniques ensure your mascara stays put and your eyes remain beautifully framed all day long.
With award season in full swing, glimpses of what beauty has to offer this year are already on full display. The Golden Globes happen to be Bhatty’s favorite ceremony, as she believes it to be the perfect kickoff for Spring beauty. She notes a return to “fresh, beautiful, healthy skin” as a key trend, with glowing complexions and bold, wide eyes featuring prominently on the red carpet. Bhatty predicts a resurgence of lipstick this year with an emollient twist, so “definitely start stalking up.” She also anticipates a shift towards glittery eyeshadows as the year progresses and with the Met Gala in May.
Some of the most iconic beauty looks are the result of experimentation, and Bhatty embraces the spontaneity of it all. “Makeup is supposed to make you feel beautiful, and if you feel beautiful then there are no rules,” she affirms. This mindset is particularly freeing for those with hooded eyes, who might shy away from certain products. “Don’t feel limited. Experiment with shapes, products, and techniques. Spring beauty is all about fresh starts, so why not refresh your makeup routine too?"
