The World's Most Expensive Piece of Art Is in a New York City Train Station

Worth over $470 million, the world's most expensive piece of art is in an unlikely place—and was made by a beer company.

You might think that the most expensive artwork in the world would be a piece from art history tucked away in a private gallery or museum. However, such is not the case. The globe's most pricey piece is called the “Da Vinci of Debt,” and located in New York City's Grand Central Terminal, a train station that connects city dwellers to nearby suburbs as well as the subway.

Valued at over $470 million, the work is a reference to the debts of nearly 45 million American university graduates, and was created unironically by beer company Natty Light.  The large-scale paper installation is composed of 2,600 college diplomas with each plaque representing $180,000—the average cost of a four-year college education in the U.S—and is now viewable at Grand Central as well as online
