Kelly Rowland Curates Sotheby's Latest Contemporary Art Auction
The singer has select six special artworks that she was personally inspired by for the curation.
Award-winning singer, actress, and songwriter Kelly Rowland can now add art curator to her list of titles. For Sotheby's latest Contemporary Curated auction, Rowland has personally selected six artworks for her curation that connected with her.
"As a first-time curator, I have always felt that art is a personal means of expression, and I wanted to highlight a group of works that speak to my experience and how I connect with art," said Rowland in a press release. "Combining my voice and vision with Sotheby's paves the way for younger generations to recognize themselves in art. There are so many young people and young artists who want to be a part of this art world. This is a beautiful way to fuse these worlds together and to allow this conversation to start."
From paintings to abstraction to figuration, the former Destiny's Child singer didn't shy away from selecting pieces with high complexity, technique, and imagination. These selections include "The Dunk" by Ernie Barnes, "Stormy Weather" by Peter Bradley, "Playing Reggae Records at the Pace House #2" by Reggie Burrows Hodges, "Red, Green, Black, Blues" by Stanley Whitney, "Four Ladies with Gold Hat" by Ernie Barnes, and "Gretchen (Men in the City)" by Robert Longo.
Each of these art pieces is distinct in its messages and creative techniques, which is perfectly representative of the way Rowland appreciates art as a form to tell your truth through your own point of view.
"As an artist, singer, songwriter turned collector, what I look for is when a piece has its own rhythm," said Rowland in the press release. "I'm especially inspired by art when it comes to movement. My first exposure to art was through figurative works that I could identify with, because as a kid, the world around me didn't look the way I did. Today, I find myself gravitating toward more abstract pieces that meld motion, energy and color – those feelings of being on stage."
Rowland is not the first celebrity to curate a Sotheby's auction. Past curators include Robert Pattinson, Ellie Goulding, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Aoki, Kim Jones, and Cynthia Erivo, to name a few. Each curation was selected with a unique perspective, as inimitable of the very art pieces they chose.
The exhibition will be on view from March 3-8 and the live auction will take place at Sotheby's New York on March 9.
