Mindfulness is the key to a healthy and peaceful life. Although there are countless options out there to ensure one is in touch and aligned with our overall wellness, the therapeutic technique of meditating through sounds has become increasingly popular in the last couple of years. This form of therapy is called sound bathing

Through the healing power of sound, sound baths help us achieve a deep relaxation of body and mind, improving our mood, mentality, and well-being. It is an ancient practice effective for its amazing benefits to reset and refresh the soul.

Here, L'OFFICIEL breaks down everything you need to know about this meditation technique of internal healing.

What are Sound Baths?

Simply put, sound baths are a form of sound therapy achieved through the emission of rhythms, vibrations, and frequencies. It is a meditation experience meant to guide the mind into a state of deep relaxation where restoring and healing can occur.

History

This form of therapy is not new as it is an ancient sound healing practice previously used to cleanse the soul. Originally, sound bath sessions trace back to ancient Greece however, people from other cultures have used them as a form of healing therapy to calm the nervous system and ease the mind.

Benefits

The purpose of sound baths is for people to create a shift of mind allowing for restoring and healing to occur. Essentially, it seeks for us to disconnect our minds from our thoughts by entering into a deep meditative state. Sound baths are useful to release tension, and stress by absorbing negative energy from our bodies. They help us relax, refresh, and recharge, improving our overall wellness

It is also believed sound baths may bring physical relief. In quantum physics, each cell is made up of vibrating matter brought together by magnetic forces. Illness can effect these vibrations, chaning their frequency, and some believe that the vibrations created during sound baths may help rebalance these and therefore restore the body.

Best Practices

Some practices to get the most out of sound baths include controlling your breaths by inhaling deeply and focusing on being present by blocking all distractions. Although as anything, every instructor has their own methods of conducting a sound bath, usually vibrations and sounds are emitted through Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, gongs, chimes, cymbals, and bells. Each tool has its own tone, which may connect with a specific energy center or chakra.

Singing bowls are among the most commonly used for sound baths. To create your own sound bath experience, take a Tibetan singing bowl and before creating any sound, hold it and set an intention for your meditation. Then, gently strike the edge of the bowl with a mallet. Let your mind focus on the sound and the intention you set as the note gently fades. You can repeat striking the bowl over the course of your meditation session, although a slow rhythm is preferred to help you calm your mind and body.
