Ditch the Plastic Water Bottle – For Good

Five water bottles to buy to start your reusable lifestyle.

One of the unintended consequences of the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle campaign was an upshot in plastic water bottle use. Many Americans justified their purchases and eased their environmental conscience by focusing on the fact that plastic water bottles can and will be recycled. Americans used 50 billion water bottles last year alone – only 23 percent of which was recycled.

In reaction, companies moved to create replacements for the plastic bottle, shifting the emphasis from recycling to reusing in the latest movement to go green. Reusable bottles are one of the easiest changes to move towards a reusable lifestyle. With refill stations sprouting up in different cities, it’s never been easier to BYOB.

Here’s a curated list of the five best reusable water bottles that can replace that plastic:

Klean Kanteen

Klean Kanteens were one of the first bottle companies to introduce a stainless steel, BPA-free reusable bottle back in 2004. Now with a line of insulated bottles, Klean Kanteen brought itself into the contemporary market, where their classic 20-ounce insulated bottle costs $31. As a certified B Corp, Klean Kanteen stresses its environmental impact, in its bottles and in its business model. The company is a strong supporter of organizations and movements that promote safe consumer products, plastic pollution, and clean water.

Hydro Flask

The Hydro Flask is famous for its double vacuum insulation, keeping water ice cold for 24 hours and hot drinks for 6. Made from stainless steel, the bottles are easy to clean and easier to transport. Hydro Flask recently solved the loud clanging of the bottle by introducing a silicone boot. The company even ventured into growlers for beer and wine. Their new My Hydro feature allows you to customize your own bottle, with a standard 21-ounce bottle goes for $33 and additional interchangeable lids for $10.

Vita Juwel

Combine crystal energy with drinking water in this glass bottle by Vita Juwel. Each 17-ounce bottle has an exchangeable crystal pod to infuse drinking water with the properties of different crystal combinations. The result is higher alkaline and oxygenation levels while boosting pH levels. At $98 per bottle, water at a higher frequency comes at a higher price point.

Copper H2O

The latest trend in reusable bottles is a surprising element: copper. Drinking from copper is part of the Ayurvedic tradition and is reported to aid digestion, boost the absorption of vitamins and minerals from foods, aid the healing process, and strengthen brain synapses by aiding myelin sheath production. At Copper H2O, a uniquely textured 20-ounce bottle costs $35. Among all its benefits, however, is a warning: too much copper can lead to gastrointestinal problems as each individual has their own sensitivity to copper.
