This is the Story Behind the Most Popular Mirror on Instagram
While the popular 'wavy' mirror was created in the 1970s, it seems to have been made for the Instagram era. The whimsical mirror, which was created by Italian architect Ettore Sottsass for the furniture and interiors company Poltronova, was designed as an homage to femininity. Named the Ultrafragola mirror—Italian for "ultimate strawberry"—the furniture piece has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, popping up in the mirror selfies of models, influencers, and fashion insiders.
Up until recently, Sottsass was best known for founding the Memphis Group, the collective of designers responsible for the bright, clashing aesthetic popular in the 1980s. Today though, his Ultrafragola mirror is almost impossible to ignore, its soft pink glow illuminating many a chic living room. While the mirror seems ubiquitous, it is far from accessible, often selling for over $10k. A status symbol, indeed.
