A First-Timer's Guide to Nantucket
With more direct flights than ever to this charming tiny island off Cape Cod, there's never been a better time to visit Nantucket.
Nestled off the coast of Massachusetts, Nantucket is a picturesque island that effortlessly blends historic charm with natural beauty. Once the whaling capital of the world, today, Nantucket is a beloved destination for travelers seeking a serene escape. With its cobblestone streets, pristine beaches, and iconic lighthouses, the island offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Whether you're wandering through the historic downtown, savoring fresh seafood, or exploring the island's many cultural and natural attractions, Nantucket promises a unique and unforgettable experience.
Where to Stay
You can’t go wrong by staying at one of The White Elephant’s exquisite properties. This summer, after a multi-million-dollar renovation expertly overseen by local designer Audrey Sterk, The Cottages at the Boat Basin are finally open for bookings. These charming cottages are situated on the historic whaling wharves at the town's base, offering a unique experience described as "the closest thing to being on a boat without actually being on one." Wake up to the waves lapping right underneath you, and the murmurs of local fishermen taking their boats out for the day.
The Cottages' renovation draws heavily on Nantucket's rich maritime history and Quaker heritage. The interiors feature nautical touches like caged lighting, woven fixtures, and brass barometer instruments. Each of the 29 cottages is uniquely designed, takes inspiration from the names of famous whaling ships from the 1700s, and features a mural depicting a "First Nantucket Settlers" scene, celebrating the island's storied past. This mural tradition, originating in the 1800s when whaling ship owners commissioned murals for their homes, remains a cherished part of Nantucket's cultural heritage. All accommodations are equipped with full kitchens ideal for summer gatherings, and many cottages also boast private outdoor decks with stunning water views.
The Cottages are especially wonderful for young families or girls trips as they offer a bit more space than your typical hotel room. But for those who crave the warmth and welcome of an inn, the White Elephant is the place to stay. The rooms are charming, with elegant nautical touches. Both the inn’s library room and some individual suites boast fireplaces, making the hotel an ideal choice for shoulder season as well as prime summer. The grounds are perfectly manicured with hydrangeas, and the lawn and pool are stunning.
The White Elephant also boasts a group of beautiful English-style cottages nearby, perfect for families needing a bit more space. Another newer offering from White Elephant Resorts is The Loft, located a stone’s throw from The Cottages at the Boat Basin. A sleek, minimal apartment reminiscent of what one might find in New York City’s Tribeca, this space is also an excellent choice for groups of friends or growing families who want to enjoy Nantucket.
The Wauwinet, on the northeastern side of the island, is another great hotel choice for couples. An elegant and serene retreat, The Wauwinet offers guests a quintessential blend of luxury and natural beauty. This historic property is renowned for its romantic waterfront location, which provides panoramic views of both the serene bay and the picturesque dunes.

Nantucket: Tips for Visiting Nantucket for the First Time
Think ahead. While last-minute trips are certainly doable, you’ll pay a premium. Be sure to book your flights and ferries in advance. JetBlue offers daily service to and from Laguardia making it easy for New Yorkers to access the island. Cape Air flies daily from Boston, and you can take advantage of ferries from Hyannis, Harwich Port, and New Bedford. This year, there are also direct flights from Charlotte, Washington D.C., and Chicago.
The best restaurants on the island will book out quickly in the high season also, so be sure to make reservations in advance.
Pack for all occasions and all weather conditions. Okay, you won’t need a gown, but Nantucket is chic—while laid-back layers are great for a stop at Cisco Brewery, you’ll want something nicer for dinner or sunset cocktails at Topper’s. Also, it gets cold. In early July, temperatures were only in the low ‘70s midday and dipped further at dusk. Bring a blazer or light jacket for the evening, and it never hurts to pack a raincoat.
Get around. Navigating the island will be easier than ever this summer thanks to the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority's new "fare-free" pilot program for the "Wave" buses, running until September. This initiative aims to encourage more visitors to use the Wave bus service to discover Nantucket's stunning beaches and picturesque downtown, all without the inconvenience of driving and finding parking.
Indulge in Elin Hilderbrand. Though she recently announced her retirement from writing about Nantucket, the author and Nantucket resident is renowned for her quintessential beach reads that take place on the island. One of her novels, The Perfect Couple, has been adapted by Netflix and is debuting on the streaming service come September, with Nicole Kidman and Leiv Schriber co-starring. If you miss the summer season, The Perfect Couple will provide just the inspo to book a visit this fall!
