All the time spent indoors catching up on movies during the pandemic has left us with some serious wanderlust. After being locked down for more than a year, one thing we're looking forward to this season is finally being allowed to travel again.
Grab your passport and get ready to use those airline miles—here are some of the most iconic film locations that you can visit in person this summer.
Skopelos, Greece (Mamma Mia!)
Now that travel restrictions are easing up, book a trip to the idyllic island of Skopelos, Greece where most of Mamma Mia! was filmed. Although the visit requires a plane from the mainland and a ferry ride, the views are well worth it. Full of lush greenery, picture-perfect blue water, and charming cobbled streets, this remote island is a dreamy summer getaway.
InterContinental Carlton Hotel, Cannes, France (To Catch A Thief)
Channel your inner Grace Kelly at the luxe hotel where the Hitchcock classic To Catch a Thief was filmed. While you're at it, check out our look at the golden era of the French Riviera for more travel inspiration.
Griffith Park (La La Land)
Recreate Mia and Sebastian's performance of "A Lovely Night" among the twinkling lights at Griffith Park in Los Angeles. The park is in close proximity to the art deco-style Griffth Observatory, offering magnigicent views of the city as well as a planetarium.
Cascate del Serio, Italy (Call Me By Your Name)
Take a trip to the roaring waterfalls where Elio and Oliver went hiking as they made the best of their remaining days together. Located in Bergamo, these are the second tallest waterfalls in all of Europe. Play Sufjan Stevens' "Mystery of Love" during your hike for maximum feels. Then, head into the picturesque town of Crema, Lombary, where the two spent mornings sipping espresso and reading, and the night dancing away.
Tiffany & Co. Flagship Store (Breakfast At Tiffany's)
Live out your Old Hollywood movie fantasies at the iconic NYC Tiffany & Co. store where Audrey Hepburn famously ate her croissant and coffee. For an immersive experience, the store's Blue Box Cafe (which will reopen in 2022) offers a full breakfast menu with posh bites such as truffle eggs, or a Tiffany Tea set with finger sandwiches and petite desserts. Located on Fifth Avenue, there's tons of shopping destinations nearby to enjoy.
Chippewa Square, Savannah, Georgia (Forrest Gump)
Visit the site of the film's famous bench scene where Forrest waited for the bus in Chippewa Square. The city of Savannah, Georgia is an underrated travel destination, with its rich history, gorgeous architecture, and plenty of shops and restaurants to enjoy.
Nijo Castle, Kyoto, Japan (Inception)
Although the mind-bending movie used a set to recreate this Japanese castle, you can visit the real location in Kyoto. Nijo Castle is a historic site that once housed the first shogun of the Edo Period. Now, tourists can visit the castle and its accopanying Ninomaru Palace and garden.
Alsace, France (Beauty and the Beast)
The picturesque animated town that Belle frolics through in Beauty and the Beast is partially inspired by the real-life fairytale towns of Alsace, France, specifcally Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé. Filled with darling colorful houses, charming libraries, and delicious wine, this French ville is an ideal summer getaway.
