For childhood friends Randy Hook, Roy-Keenan Abercrombia, and Kenneth Atkins, growing up horseback riding was a life-changing experience. As riders at the same ranch, Compton Jr. Posse, the group learned how to care for horses and one another, leading them to start their own collective of Black cowboys with six other friends. Founded in 2017, the Compton Cowboys foster community and mentorship programs for youth in South Central Los Angeles. Hook's aunt, Mayisha Akbar, founded Compton Jr. Posse, so the passion for community building and horseback riding runs in the family. Through equestrian care and farming, students get to build relationships while learning about and participating in the legacy of Black cowboys. Abercrombia in particular is excited to reclaim the past while he educates himself and others. Even though teaching history was not originally part of the Cowboys' mission, it's become as an important part of their program as horseback riding and friendship.
