Male Shoppers Want Standout, Statement Accessories

According to L'OFFICIEL's latest men's global shopping survey, male shoppers are gravitating towards unconventional expressive clothing, and they want trendy, funky accessories to match.

L'OFFICIEL's recent Fall/Winter 2020 men's global shopping survey reveals that the desire for bold, unique pieces translates to accessories, too. All around the world, men are leaning into the desire for distinctive accessories to complement their clothes and usher us into a new era of standout fashion and personal style.

Even suited for the Zoom era, a bold necklace, earring, or glasses can add a point of interest and personality on-screen. The proven ability for statement pieces to stand out through a lens, however, was first proven by men daring enough to add the accoutrements for their stage or red carpet appearances—from Elton John’s flamboyant sunglasses to Harry Styles’ pearl necklace.

A relatively recent cultural reconsideration of masculinity has led men and menswear designers alike to scrap too-safe looks in favor of fashion that prioritizes individual aesthetic expression. Gucci’s Alessendro Michele has long celebrated gender-fluid fashion on the runway, and for Fall/Winter 2020 the fashion house’s sparkling crystal necklaces were met with silk opera gloves from Dior Men and fire engine red glasses from Loewe. Ranking in the top 20 accessories that male shoppers voted for, both the Gucci necklace and Loewe sunglasses were favorite statement styles.

This desire for funky, trendy accessories reveals just another way that consumers show their excitement about contemporary designers breaking boundaries in menswear. While men globally were leaning towards these bold pieces, our survey showed that French men are especially willing to take style risks with their accessories. According to their votes, oversized hats, sunglasses, and handbags were favored along with chain jewelry, which has been an increasingly popular jewelry trend for people of all genders over the past few seasons.
